Black, Gleason students place 1st, 2nd in Elementary Spelling Bee

Jan. 30, 2019—Black Elementary School fifth-grade student William Choi-Kim won first place by correctly spelling the word illicitly in the 22nd round of the annual districtwide Elementary Spelling Bee, held at the Berry Center on Jan. 29.

Gleason Elementary School fourth-grade student Shomili Ghosh was the runner-up. Both Choi-Kim and Ghosh will compete in the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee, scheduled to be televised live from the University of Houston on March 23.

“All of our spellers impressed the spelling bee officials and audience members with their poise and confidence. The students should be very proud of themselves,” said Gaye Stuchly, CFISD Elementary Spelling Bee coordinator. “The dedication and diligence each of the students spent preparing for the district Elementary Spelling Bee was evident in their performance. Our students should be commended for going above and beyond their everyday learning in order to strive for excellence.”
