Bridgeland boys, Cy Woods girls claim District 14-6A golf team titles

The Bridgeland High School boys’ golf team won the District 14-6A Boys’ Golf Tournament, held April 10-11 at Cypress Lakes Golf Club, and qualified for the Region II-6A Tournament. Members of the first-place team were Lucas Borrero, Kolton Nunez, Nicholas Labarbera, Cole McClellan and Matthews Andrews.

April 15, 2019—The Bridgeland High School boys’ golf team won the team championship with a two-day score of 640 (310-330) at the District 14-6A Boys’ Golf Tournament, held April 10-11 at Cypress Lakes Golf Club. On the girls’ side, Cypress Woods High School won its second title in three years, posting a two-round score of 751 (375-376) at the District 14-6A Girls’ Golf Tournament, held April 2-3 at BlackHorse Golf Club.

All qualifying teams and medalists advance to the Region II-6A Golf Tournament at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course (5200 Bagby Ave.) in Waco. The boys’ tournament is set for April 22-23, while the girls’ tournament is set for April 24-25.

The five Bridgeland golfers who comprised the winning total were Lucas Borrero (77-78–155), Kolton Nunez (76-84–160), Nicholas Labarbera (84-80–164), Cole McClellan (76-89–165) and Matthews Andrews (81-88–169).

Four of the Bears finished among the top 10 in the first-place victory, led by Borrero finishing second individually and Nunez placing fourth. Labarbera and McClellan finished eighth and 10th, respectively.

“It was a true team effort in a sport that is not always associated with being a team sport,” said Cole Kristynik, Bridgeland head boys’ golf coach. “All five players contributed to our overall score in the two-day tournament and it was awesome watching all team members cheering each other on as they entered the 18th green. We are excited to keep working for regionals.”

Cypress Woods High School was the runner-up with a two-round score of 649 (321-328) to also qualify for the regional tournament. The five golfers who made up the second-place team were Roberto Espinosa (76-78–154), John Kearney (78-81–159), Riley Simmons (84-80–164), Seth Bishop (83-89–172) and Payton Baker (85-92–177). Espinosa won the individual championship.

The two individual medalists who also qualified for the regional tournament are Cypress Ranch High School senior Ruben Fourie (77-83–160) and Tomball Memorial High School’s Glen Davis (83-79–162).

On the girls’ side, the four Cypress Woods golfers who comprised the winning total were Reese Winn (87-86–173), Skylar Wilson (86-93–179), Winter Wolff (97-95–192) and Kylie Brashers (105-102–207).

Four of the Wildcats finished among the top eight in winning the championship, led by Winn placing third individually, and Wilson and Wolff placing fifth and sixth, respectively.

“I am so proud of our girls this year and their commitment to the team and representing Cy Woods,” said Ashley Ahlfinger, Cypress Woods head girls’ golf coach. “They have worked really hard for the District Championship and have made huge improvements. They have wonderful grades and are very smart young ladies. Each of these girls will be successful in life and I look forward to seeing our senior Reese at her last regional tournament.”

Langham Creek High School was the runner-up with a two-round score of 793 (394-399) to qualify for regionals. The four golfers who claimed second place were Sora Kim (72-76–148), Tyler Cook (83-75–158), Jaeden Roberson (108-115–223) and Alex Osborne (131-133–264). Kim and Cook placed first and second individually.

The individual medalists who qualified for the regional tournament are Bridgeland sophomore Smitha Bhagavatula (89-89–178) and Cypress Lakes High School senior Angel Caballero (99-95–194).
