Postell and fellow seniors Jett Booker and Connor Cabaniss swept the top three places in pole vault, helping the Bears total 128 points and claim the team championship.

April 9, 2021—CFISD boys’ and girls’ track and field athletes qualified for the area track and field meet after placing in the top four of their respective events at the District 16-6A Championships held March 31 and April 1 at Bridgeland High School. The host Bears also made history, as the Bridgeland boys’ and girls’ track teams earned their first titles.

In the girls’ competition, Bridgeland pulled away from runner-up Cypress Ranch High School. The Bears totaled 154.5 points to claim the team championship. Cypress Ranch finished second with 144 points and Cypress Woods High School finished third with 126 points.

0409 District 16-6A Track and Field Championships 3 WEB.jpgBridgeland High School sophomore Emily Ellis swept the distance events at the District 16-6A Track and Field Championships. She won the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs to earn 30 points and help the Bears total 154.5 points and win the team championship.

“I'm really proud of the ladies for earning their first district championship,” said Tom Kennedy, Bridgeland head girls’ track and field coach. “It was a tight battle between Cypress Ranch, Cypress Woods and us, and they fought for every point down the stretch. All in all, 11 girls qualified for area with a total of 16 entries in 11 of the 17 events. I'm impressed by the range of the group as a whole and feel like they've set the standard for Bridgeland girls’ track and field moving forward. I'm excited to see how they perform at the area meet and expect many to advance to region.”

Bridgeland was also the highest-finishing school on the boys’ side, with the Bears totaling 128 points to claim the team championship. They finished ahead of runner-up Cypress Park High School, which finished with 110 points, and third-place Cypress Ranch (99 points).

0409 District 16-6A Track and Field Championships 2 WEB.jpgCypress Woods High School junior Eugene Liger won the 300-meter hurdles and placed second in the 110-meter hurdles at the District 16-6A Track and Field Championships, advancing to the area meet in both events.

“Our boys performed well overall with points being scored in almost every event, which is a huge testament to their commitment to team success,” said Mauricio Vazquez, Bridgeland head boys’ track and field coach. “During our preseason meeting, our boys set our primary goal as winning a team district championship, not just for themselves but for the 2020 team that didn’t get the opportunity to contend due to the canceled season. This program has been built around serving each other, and it was a special moment watching them achieve their goal. We have very strong distance and pole vault squads that are the heartbeat of this team; however, the points scored by our young group of sprinters, relays, jumpers and throwers showed that we are headed in the right direction as a program.”

The top four individuals in each event from both District 15-6A and District 16-6A will compete in the area meet, scheduled for April 15 at Klein Memorial Stadium (16607 Stuebner Airline Road). The top four finishers from each event at the area meet will advance to the Region II-6A Championships, set for April 23-24 at Midway High School (8200 Mars Drive) in Waco.

0409 District 16-6A Track and Field Championships 4 WEB.jpgCypress Ranch High School sophomore Camryn Clark helped lead the Mustangs to a second-place finish at the District 16-6A Track and Field Championships. Clark swept the long jump and triple jump, and anchored the Mustangs’ winning 800-meter relay team.
