Cy-Fair High School senior Esthel Shin’s artwork, “Meat Rebecca,” earned Best of Show in the High School division of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) School Art Program.
Jan. 23, 2018—CFISD’s winners in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) School Art Program were announced this week after two judging rounds featuring art teachers and professors, and members of the Texas Art Education Association board chose the top artwork from CFISD student artists. The selections have been taken to NRG Arena for the next level of the contest.
A total of 11 winners were selected in the High School, Middle School and Elementary divisions that will be displayed in the Hayloft Gallery at NRG Center during the HLSR, Feb. 27-March 18.
Spillane Middle School eighth-grade student Alan Moon’s artwork, “The Cow in Troughs Time;” earned Best of Show in the Middle School division of the HLSR School Art Program.
In place of a panel of judges from the HLSR organization, who have routinely determined the CFISD winners who advanced, the district used two rounds for the 2018 contest. Art teachers chose the top 100 pieces from all the entries.
For a final round, five judges comprised of the Texas Art Education Association board members and art education professors were brought in.
Wells Elementary School second-grade student Jordan Evans’ artwork, “Aqua Clouds,” earned Best of Show in the Elementary division of the HLSR School Art Program.
In the High School division:
Cypress Ranch High School junior Ruby He’s artwork, “The Llama,” won a gold medal in the High School division of the HLSR School Art Program.
In the Middle School division:
Bridgeland High School freshman Christen Lee‘s artwork, “The Country Life Is Sew Nice,” won a gold medal in the High School division of the HLSR School Art Program.
In the Elementary division:
Spillane Middle School seventh-grade student Celeste Moreno’s artwork, “It Was a Beautiful Day,” won a gold medal in the Middle School division of the HLSR School Art Program.
The rodeo art exhibit will be displayed in the hallways of CFISD’s Instructional Support Center (10300 Jones Road) through Jan. 30, and is open to the public during business hours. A special gallery showing for parents of the artists will be held Jan. 25 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Students, parents, teachers, campus staff and visitors are encouraged to wear western clothes to the event.
Wells Elementary School fifth-grade student Milana Moher’s artwork, “The Green Trees,” won a gold medal in the Elementary division of the HLSR School Art Program.
Cypress Ranch High School freshman Amy Hammett’s artwork, “Steady,” won a special merit award in the High School division of the HLSR School Art Program.
Cypress Creek High School junior Tessa De La Fuente’s artwork, “Life is better on the Farm,” won a special merit award in the High School division of the HLSR School Art Program.
Cy-Fair High School freshman Catherine Liu’s artwork, “Trailing Four O’clock,” won a special merit award in the High School division of the HLSR School Art Program.
Bridgeland High School sophomore Alexa Toribio’s artwork, “It’s Getting Crazy,” won a special merit award in the High School division of the HLSR School Art Program.
