CFISD athletes qualify for swimming, diving state championships

Feb. 6, 2019—Three CFISD athletes claimed regional titles and 13 others in 13 total events qualified for the state championships following the Region V-6A Championships, held Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at the CFISD Natatorium.

The first- and second-place finishers in each region and next eight swimmers with the best regional finish times in the state advanced to the UIL Swimming and Diving Championships, to be held Feb. 15-16 at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin. In diving, the top three finishers in each of the eight regions will advance to state.

In the team finish at the regional championships, the Cy-Fair High School boys’ and girls’ and Cypress Creek High School girls’ swimming and diving teams all finished among the top five.

Cypress Creek scored 201 points in the girls’ team competition to place third. The Cy-Fair girls’ team placed fourth with 198 points. Katy Taylor (339.50) and Katy Cinco Ranch (202) were the top-two finishers. Cypress Woods (161.5) and Cypress Ranch (124) high schools were top-10 finishers, placing sixth and ninth, respectively.

On the boys’ side, Cy-Fair scored 204 points to place fifth. The Bobcats finished behind Katy Seven Lakes (358), Fort Bend Clements (266.5), Katy Cinco Ranch (211.5) and Katy Taylor (204.5). Bridgeland (148.5), Cypress Woods (142) and Cypress Ranch (73) were top-10 finishers, placing seventh, eighth and 10th.

The following girls’ regional champions will represent CFISD at state:

  • Cypress Creek freshman Hayden Miller, 200-yard freestyle (1:50.72); and
  • Cypress Woods senior Sydney Stanford, 100 freestyle (50.68).

In the boys’ competition, CFISD had one regional champion in two events:

  • Cy-Fair junior Cameron Dafoe,
    • 200 individual medley (1:51.25); and
    • 100 backstroke (51.03).

The following swimmers also qualified for state:

Boys

  • Cypress Woods sophomore Munzer Kabbara,
    • 200 individual medley (1:51.95); and
    • 100 butterfly (51.35); and
  • Cy-Fair junior Bryan Plascyzk, 1-meter diving (353.85);
  • Bridgeland sophomore Jackson Dement, 500 freestyle (4:31.91); and
  • Cy-Fair 200 medley relay – Cameron Dafoe, David Armstrong, Connor Gallagher and Andrew McMahan (1:37.07).

Girls

  • Bridgeland freshman Hanna Vinklarek, 1-meter diving (331.20);
  • Cypress Woods senior Holly Humphries, 1-meter diving (282.40);
  • Cypress Creek sophomore Keilah Eckhart, 100 butterfly (56.72);
  • Cypress Creek freshman Hayden Miller, 500 freestyle (4:53.11);
  • Cy-Fair freshman Claire Dafoe, 500 freestyle (5:00.28);
  • Cypress Ranch senior Kylie Bennett, 500 freestyle (5:04.24);
  • Cypress Woods senior Sydney Stanford, 100 backstroke (56.44); and
  • Cypress Creek 400 freestyle relay – Keilah Eckhart, Emma Matson, Katy Zimmerman and Hayden Miller (3:33.84).
