July 21, 2020Dr. Kayne Smith, CFISD director of transportation, was recently appointed president of the Texas Association for Pupil Transportation (TAPT) in conjunction with the association’s 2020 virtual awards ceremony. Smith will serve as TAPT’s 48th president and lead the executive committee for the 2020-2021 term.

A TAPT executive committee member the past three years, Smith leads one of the largest affiliate organizations to the National Association of Pupil Transportation in helping facilitate networking and educational opportunities. He served as parliamentarian for two years before serving as president-elect for the 2019-2020 term. In addition, Smith has served as the legislative committee chairperson since 2015.

“It was an honor to be elected as President of the Texas Association for Pupil Transportation for 2020-2021,” Smith said. “I am excited to be able to serve the countless school bus drivers, attendants, technicians, directors and other staff members across the state whose purpose is to provide a safe and healthy transportation service to the students of Texas. I am deeply grateful for the support and encouragement from CFISD and my team in transportation.”

The TAPT was formed in 1972 and held its first conference the next year. A professional certification program was started in 1991 with class topics including personnel management, student safety, operations, vehicle maintenance and budgeting and reporting. In addition, TAPT offers scholarship opportunities for students and adult members and contests to promote safety of school bus transportation.

Smith returned to CFISD as the director of transportation in September 2018 after starting in 2014 as an area director at the Telge Transportation Center and then as an assistant director of human resources for the transportation department. He received his TAPT certification in 2008 and has served as an instructor in numerous professional development courses.
