May 2, 2018—Cypress Woods High School junior John Kearney qualified for the UIL Golf State Tournament after medaling at the Region III-6A Golf Tournament, while golfers from Bridgeland, Cy-Fair, Cypress Creek, Cypress Falls, Cypress Woods, Jersey Village and Langham Creek high schools completed their seasons at regional tournaments.
Kearney finished with a two-round score of 148 (77-71), tying for fifth overall on the individual leaderboard and earning one of the three medalist spots from the regional competition. He advances to the UIL State Tournament, to be held May 14-15 at Legacy Hill Golf Club in Georgetown.
“From a freshman who shot a 99 on the same course to two years later shooting a 71 in tough conditions with wind,” said Curtis Neill, Cypress Woods boys’ head coach. “I was just truly happy for the young man and his teammates were too. He’ll represent Cy-Fair ISD and District 17-6A very well there at state.”
Kearney and his Cypress Woods teammates shot a two-round score of 644 (328-316) and Cy-Fair High School posted a two-day score of 654 (330-324), finishing eighth and 12th, respectively, in the team competition, held April 26-27 at Eagle Pointe Golf Club in Mont Belvieu.
Cypress Falls High School junior Bryce Penn was CFISD’s other golfer to place among the top 15 individual boys, as he shot a 152 (77-75) to finish tied for 10th.
On the girls’ side, Cypress Woods shot a 800 (396-404) and Cy-Fair posted a 886 (454-432) to finish 14th and 15th in the Region III-6A Tournament, held April 24-25 at Eagle Pointe.
Cypress Creek High School senior Kelly Swanson (81-84-165) was CFISD's top individual finisher, as she placed 21st. Other golfers to finish in the top 50 were Cy-Fair sophomore Neha Dewan (92-87-179) and Cypress Woods junior Reese Winn (88-92-180), who placed 39th and tied for 40th, respectively.
In Class 5A, Bridgeland High School sophomore Lucas Borrero (73-82-155) placed 11th in the Region III-5A Golf Tournament, held April 25-26 at the Golf Club at La Torretta in Montgomery. Bridgeland freshman Smith Bhagavatula (86-89-175) finished 13th in the girls’ regional competition, held April 23-24.
