June 14, 2018—Cy-Fair High School graduate Amanda Hamilton recently won a fully-restored Ford Fusion and complimentary oil changes for a year from Elite Auto Experts, claiming the top prize from the Drive & Thrive Car Giveaway put on by the repair and collision center in partnership with Cy-Hope.

Hamilton was surprised with the car in front of the school on May 31, the day before she joined the rest of Cy-Fair High School’s Class of 2018 in receiving their high school diplomas.

Ironically, Hamilton had been asking her parents for a car before she goes off to Stephen F. Austin State University in the fall. Her mother, Karen Hamilton, is a library aide at Walker Elementary School, and signed up to work summer school in hopes of helping pay for one.

The surprise eased a burden for the family.

“I was very relieved,” Karen Hamilton said. “It was very hard keeping the secret for a week without telling anybody. And then hearing my daughter say she needed a car and knowing she would be getting one was special.”

Added Moufid Rabieh, the owner of Elite Auto Experts: “We feel almost an obligation to give back to our community. Every year we give away a car from our business and we love it.”

Contest participants must have been graduating seniors who were part of Cy-Hope’s Ambassador of Compassion program or been a recipient of one of Cy-Hope’s “POP” financial assistance awards in addition to passing an advanced placement, dual credit or certification course.

The contest also called for the entrant to write a personal essay describing himself or herself while also conveying how meaningful it was to receive Cy-Hope financial assistance toward college or career readiness.

Hamilton’s winning essay spoke of her wanting to study nursing after watching the care her mother, a breast cancer survivor, received at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Martin is also a breast cancer survivor.

Amanda Hamilton’s essay didn’t just touch on her need for transportation, but also on her decision to study nursing at SFA. Her mother is a breast cancer survivor, and Hamilton was inspired by the care and attention Karen received by the nursing staff at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Wanting to study forensics was out and nursing was in.

“The nurses at MD Anderson took care of her really well,” Amanda Hamilton said. “I just hope that I’ll be able to take care of someone like that one day.”

Added Karen Hamilton: “It makes me appreciate that when she goes off to college, just how she’ll apply herself. In her eyes, those nurses were the ones that saved her mom.”

Elite Auto Experts has given away cars to single mothers and victims from major inclement weather events and Rabieh said he plans to continue the partnership with Cy-Hope to help more CFISD graduates.

As for Amanda Hamilton, her new car has already been helpful in getting her around now and preparing for college.

“It’s definitely helped me out,” she said. “I’m shopping for a dorm room, moving stuff left and right and across town. I have a big trunk so those little things are exciting.”
