Nov. 9, 2017—Becky Koop, principal at Pope Elementary School, was named the new principal at Smith Middle School on Nov. 9. Koop replaces Susan Higgins, who will retire in December.
Koop’s 22-year education career began in San Antonio before she made her way to CFISD after three years. She spent three years at Hancock Elementary School, moving to Hamilton Middle School for one year and then Matzke Elementary School for one year.
She moved into administration in 2003, serving one year as an instructional specialist at Emmott Elementary School. Koop spent five years as an assistant principal at Jowell and Warner elementary schools before she was promoted to principal at Matzke in 2009. She spent four years at Matzke before Koop was named the first principal at Pope in 2013.
Koop received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and her Master of Education from Prairie View A&M University.
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to be a member of the incredible Smith Middle School team!” Koop said.
