May 27, 2017—The CFISD Special Olympics program concluded an outstanding 2016-2017 school year with a banquet on May 20 on Cypress Falls High School.
Approximately 60 athletes and 20 coaches attended the banquet, which featured a dinner, awards and special presentations for athletes who are aging out of the program and those who earned letter jackets. The night concluded with a DJ and dancing.
Approximately 95 student athletes participated in Special Olympics swimming, volleyball, bowling, basketball or track in 2016-2017. In order to qualify to participate, the student must be enrolled in a CFISD school, be at least 8 years old and have an intellectual disability and/or significant cognitive delays.
CFISD coaches are all employees of the district and are certified to coach through Special Olympics Texas.

“Our banquet is always a fun time, filled with good food, the presentation of awards, a DJ party and dancing,” said Darci Garcia, district Special Olympics coordinator and Hopper Middle School adaptive PE teacher. “Our banquet this year was an ‘emoji’ theme.”
The letter jacket recipients were required to participate in CFISD Special Olympics for at least three consecutive years, participate in at least one sport in the current school year and be classified as a junior or 17 years of age by the end of 2016-2017.
