Jan. 22, 2019—Reed Elementary School fifth-grade student Abel Montoya earned first place for his grade in curriculum provider Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Texas Art & Literacy Summer Contest with his artwork titled “The Dark Knight.”
School: Reed Elementary School
Accomplishments: Montoya was nominated by Heather Bermea, a reading and writing resource teacher at Reed Elementary School who credits the 11-year-old for his artistic ability. He entered a piece titled “The Dark Knight” in Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s Texas Art & Literacy Summer Contest and won first place for fifth grade.
Favorite class: “Art because I love to draw and create things.”
Favorite things to do after class: “Draw and spend time with my little sister. I also enjoy spending time with my close friends from school.”
Favorite website: “Coolmath.com because the games are fun.”
Favorite movie: “Batman because he’s my favorite superhero.”
Ambition: When asked to draw a picture of what he wants to do when he grows up, Montoya drew himself in a cap and gown graduating college.
What three things can’t you live without?: “Family, food and television.”
What are you most looking forward to this semester: “Getting ready for middle school.”
