Dec. 11, 2017—Labay Middle School eighth-grade student Jonathan Valdez was the starting quarterback for the eighth-grade “A” team and has also spent three years with the school choral program, excelling in UIL Solo & Ensemble competition.

Accomplishments: Valdez was the starting quarterback for the eighth-grade “A” team and threw double-digit touchdowns during the season. His coaches say he is a joy to work with. In addition, Valdez excels as a member of the Labay choral program for three years, performing as a featured soloist in performances. He has participated in UIL Solo & Ensemble competition and received superior ratings.
Favorite class: Science. “I like my science class because the teacher makes it fun to learn.”
Favorite things to do after class: “I love to play baseball.”
Favorite song: Chicken Fried by Zac Brown Band.
Favorite website: Eastbay. “I can look up athletic apparel.”
Favorite TV show: SpongeBob SquarePants. “It’s funny and has a lot of hidden jokes.”
Favorite movie: 42. “It show Jackie Robinson’s commitment.”
What topics/things are you passionate about?: “I like to help people in need. I helped out at shelters during Hurricane Harvey.”
Who inspires you?: “My dad inspires me because he tells me to be true to myself, to trust my gut and to be a great leader.”
What three things can’t you live without?: “I can’t live without baseball – I’ve been playing since I was four. Also, my dogs and my grandpa’s fishing tackle box. He gave it to me before he died, and he told me to be the best I can be. He loved baseball too.”
