March 25, 2019—Dean Middle School eighth-grade student Mateo Ortiz is credited by his teachers as being a well-rounded student-athlete who balances academics with three sports (football, basketball and track and field) and band.

Accomplishments: Ortiz, a three-sport athlete, has been heavily involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and proved to be an integral part in helping Dean earn the FCA Huddle of the Year Award during the 2017-2018 school year.
Favorite class: “My favorite class this year is math. The contest this year seems much easier than it has been in years past, so I am really enjoying the class.”
Favorite things to do after class: “I love to play sports with my brothers, work out and play video games.”
Favorite website: “I like YouTube because I really like to watch videos.”
Favorite TV show: “Kickin’ It is my favorite TV show because I think it is funny.”
Favorite movie: “Remember the Titans is my favorite movie. I like how they worked through their problems and I love football.”
Ambition: “I would love to be a professional football player or do something in the sports field.”
What topics/things are you passionate about?: “I am passionate about football, track season (discus) and my family.”
Who inspires you?: “My older brother, C.J., inspires me. C.J. has set a good example for me by always making good grades and being a competitive athlete.”
What three things can’t you live without?: “I can’t live without time to work out, music and God.”
What are you most looking forward to this semester?: “I am glad that track season is finally here because I am looking forward to throwing discus again in meets.”
