Oct. 26, 2020—Bridgeland High School senior Tommy Yarrish is recognized for his student media accomplishments and his growing presence on social media as a sports journalist.
School: Bridgeland High School
Accomplishments: Yarrish was named the second-best Social Media Reporter in the country by the National Scholastic Press Association last year. In addition to reporting for Bridgeland Student Media, Yarrish has worked for VYPE, The Old Coach and Varsity Wires covering all sports. His journalistic work has also appeared on ESPN radio and MaxPreps Overtime.
Favorite class: “Journalism, because I get to learn more about what I want to do with my career, which is broadcasting.”
Favorite things to do after class: “Outside of school, I love to cover football games. I have covered big games outside of CFISD as part of my reporting.”
Favorite song: “I like rap music.”
Favorite website/app: “Twitter is my favorite app because that is where I have made my mark and show my best work.”
Favorite TV show: “I don’t watch a lot of TV, but when I do it’s sports or Inside the NBA.”
Favorite movie: “I love Space Jam because it’s a classic.”
Ambition: “I would love to be a play-by-play broadcaster, whether for a specific team or a major media corporation.”
What topics/things are you passionate about?: “Sports and anything to do with sports. That is what my life revolves around.”
What inspires you?: “My family inspires me the most because I want to make my parents proud, and my ‘Fab Four,’ which consists of my grandma, great-aunts and great- uncle. Family is very important to me.”
What three things can’t you live without?: “My family, my camera and my phone.”
What are you most looking forward to this semester?: “Football, no doubt. It’s the best time of the year. Even with social distancing, it’s still great to be on the field, to hear the crowd and to be there working hard with my journalism friends to make the best product that we can.”
