Dec. 13, 2016—Bane Elementary School fourth-grade student Vanessa Rodriguez is known for being respectful to all her teachers, according to Bane Principal Dr. Carrie Marz. The bilingual honor roll student who earned perfect attendance has a passion for cooking, and aspires to have a career as a chef.

Accomplishments: Bane Student of the Month; honor roll recipient; earned perfect attendance; member of the Name that Book team.
Favorite class: Language arts. “I am studying for the district Name that Book contest and I love to read. Reading takes my mind off stuff like when I am mad or stressed. Reading makes me feel better.”
Favorite things to do after class: “I like to watch TV. I like cartoons and movies. I also like to play things like jump rope and running outside. I spend lots of time in my room reading books where it is quiet.”
Favorite song: La Carretera by Prince Royce.
Favorite website: “Google is my friend and helps me with everything!”
Favorite TV show: Mi corazón es tuyo. “It's a novela that's been on for a long time and it is super entertaining.”
Favorite movie: Zootopia. “It’s a movie about following your dreams. The bunny became a police officer even when others told her that she wouldn't be able to do it.”
Ambition: “I want to be a chef. I have always been interested in my mother’s cooking. And right now, I’m starting to cook for my dad for practice. I make pollo con vegetales for my dad.”
What topics/things are you passionate about? “Something that is important to me is the family tradition of el Día de los Muertos. We celebrate and honor family members who have died. My grandmother makes a decorated table with family photos and makes special food. As a family, we say the Rosary on this special day.”
What inspires you? “My mom because she teaches me all kinds of stuff like family traditions, how to do my homework, how to take care of my sister (even though she drives me crazy) and how to cook.”
What three things can’t you live without? My family, my friends and my dog, Videl.
What are you most looking forward to this year? Taking a field trip to Jesse Jones Park. “I am excited about learning about nature and the early people of Texas.”
