CFISD students place in Houston Fire Prevention Poster Contest

CFISD STUDENTS PLACE IN HOUSTON FIRE PREVENTION POSTER CONTEST
Copeland Elementary School fifth grade student Sofia Nathani placed second overall and won a $200 cash prize in the 45th annual Houston Fire Prevention Poster Contest.

Dec. 13, 2019—Nine CFISD students from Copeland Elementary School and Spillane Middle School placed in the 45th annual Houston Fire Prevention Poster Contest, sponsored by Independent Insurance Agents of Houston.

Copeland fifth grade student Sofia Nathani won second place overall, receiving a $200 cash prize. Nathani’s winning poster was a hand-drawn piece showing two people exiting a burning building with the words “Don’t delay, get out of fire’s way” written. Nathani was joined by fellow Copeland fifth grade student Aileen Pavon, who earned a second-place ribbon in the fifth grade age group. Copeland kindergarten student Alfie Robinson-Powell earned a second-place ribbon in his age group, second grade student Eliana Guevara earned a first-place ribbon in her age group and third grade student Claire Jones earned a third-place ribbon in her age group. Copeland fourth grade student Salina Khamly also placed in her age group, receiving a third-place ribbon.

“I am very proud of the effort put forth by my students,” said Amy Krengel, Copeland art teacher. “Their success has inspired them and others to enter more contests.”

Spillane sixth grade students Audrey Szilagyi, Chloe Moon, and Jacob Herred all placed in their age group, receiving first-, second- and third-place ribbons, respectively. The Spillane trio swept the sixth grade age group.

“This was the first time Spillane has entered the annual Houston Fire Prevention Contest and it was very exciting not only to win first place but to sweep our grade category,” said Lori Longoria, Spillane art teacher. “I’m so proud of my students for their hard work.”

The annual awards ceremony was held at Houston Fire House Station 8 on Nov. 16.

The Houston Fire Prevention Poster Contest is a long-held tradition between the Houston Fire Museum, Independent Insurance Agents of Houston and greater Houston area school districts. The contest invites students to use their artistic ability to help spread fire prevention messages. The contest is open to all Greater Houston-area elementary, middle and high school students.
