Aug. 27, 2018—Proximity helped lead to Houston’s First Baptist Church’s Cypress campus entering into a pair of Adopt-a-School partnerships. A relationship led to a third, with the faith-based organization officially adopting Sheridan Elementary School on Aug. 24.

CFISD Adopt-a-School program pairs schools with community and business partners to utilize resources of the community to strengthen and enrich the quality of education for students.

With Houston’s First Baptist Church’s Cypress campus but a few hundred yards from Bridgeland High School and Wells Elementary School, the organization, which was launched in 2013 and held services at Smith Middle School, adopted the two campuses within Bridgeland during the 2017-2018 school year.

Sheridan counselor Lisa Nachin, a member of the church, inquired about the possible partnership, and it didn’t take long for the union to come to be.

“We’re all about partnering with the community and different agencies, and Cy-Fair ISD obviously is a huge part in what holds our community together in so many ways,” said Jason Swiggart, pastor at Houston’s First Baptist Church’s Cypress campus. “We’re excited to support Sheridan, love the teachers and give them what they need, as well as with the students in helping them be successful.”

Swiggart visited with the Sheridan staff, with Nachin presenting him with an oversized card of appreciation and thanking the faith-based organization for joining in the adoption.
