Sept. 6, 2018—The Houston CPA Society awarded $5,323 in grant funds to two CFISD schools as part of the CPAs Helping Schools program, culminating the spring 2018 cycle with the projects to be implemented during the 2018-2019 school year.

The primary focus of the CPAs Helping Schools program is to provide improved educational opportunities for all students, especially at-risk students or those in need of special programs to enable quality learning environments. Since 2002, the program has awarded more than $550,000 to more than 200 schools in the 13-county area it serves, with financial support helping establish and continue initiatives for math and technology, library programs, science materials, fine arts programs and health awareness.

The society’s member services coordinator Carol Spencer, coordinates the application process. David Garza, chair of the CPAs Helping Schools committee, and Laura Mardis, committee vice-chair, presented grants to the following schools on Aug. 7 during the society’s Partner in Education event:

  • Bane Elementary School – Playaway Bookpacks, devices-with-book kits that enable students to hear the words while reading and help implement the “Just Press Play” project; and
  • Wilson Elementary School – hands-on instructional supplies in helping launch a “Reading and Writing Success Using Hands-on-Materials” project for kindergarten students.

Our kindergarten students will have the opportunity to learn through hands-on meaningful learning experiences that will promote reading and writing success,” said Katie Smith, Wilson kindergarten teacher. “We were fortunate to have been awarded funding last year as well and it has proven to be a learning success. With the continued support from Houston CPA Society, our students exceeded their academic expectations in reading and writing. Our students, parents and staff are grateful for the support of Houston CPA Society in contributing to the success of our school.”

Said Andi Skowronek, Bane Elementary School librarian: “I am so grateful for the generosity from the Houston CPA Society for supporting our students at Bane Elementary. Our project "Just Press Play" will allow our students to discover the joy of pairing audiobooks with traditional reading. For our students and for our school, this project is going to ignite a reading revolution. As the librarian, I'm giddy with the possibilities of where this project can take our readers.”
