Cy-Fair High School sophomore running back L.J. Johnson and the Bobcats defeated Humble Atascocita, 41-38, in a Class 6A Division I Region III semifinal. They advanced to meet Galena Park North Shore in the Region III championship at 6 p.m. on Dec. 8 at NRG Stadium.
Dec. 2, 2018—For the second consecutive season, two CFISD football teams will play in regional championship games after Cypress Creek High School and Cy-Fair High School won their respective regional semifinals playoff games on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
In the Class 6A Division I playoff bracket, Cy-Fair defeated Humble Atascocita 41-38 on Dec. 1 at NRG Stadium. The Bobcats improved to 11-2 on the season.
“I’m happy to have this one and looking forward to the challenge next week,” said Ed Pustejovsky, Cy-Fair head football coach and campus athletic coordinator. “Just keep working hard, playing hard and doing things right and we’ll see what happens.”
Cypress Creek High School senior defensive back Arzeviur Richardson (No. 20) and the Cougars defeated Humble Summer Creek, 43-14, in a Class 6A Division II Region III semifinal. They advanced to meet Beaumont West Brook in the Region III championship at 2 p.m. on Dec. 8 at NRG Stadium.
In the Division II bracket, Cypress Creek beat Humble Summer Creek 43-14 on Nov. 30 at Rice Stadium. The Cougars recorded their fourth win in a row to move to 8-5.
“They kept plugging away, they came out with good attitudes and they did all those things asked of them,” said Greg McCaig, Cypress Creek head football coach and campus athletic coordinator. “We could have easily collapsed and yet they showed character. There’s a great deal of persistence and resolve in them, and you could see it out here.”
The two teams will both play on Dec. 8 at NRG Stadium (1 Reliant Park).
Cypress Creek advances to face Beaumont West Brook for the Division II Region III championship, with the playoff game set for 2 p.m. The Cougars will serve as the designated home team.
Cy-Fair advances to face Galena Park North Shore for the Division I Region III championship, with the game scheduled for 6 p.m. The Bobcats will also serve as the designated home team.
Pre-sale tickets for both regional championship games will be $11 for adults and $6 for students. All tickets at the gate will be $15 apiece and NRG Stadium charges $12 per vehicle for parking. Pre-sale tickets are cash only and no online ticket sales are available.

Tickets for both playoff games will also be available for purchase at the CFISD athletic office at the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress Road, entrance 2) on Tuesday, Dec. 4 through Thursday, Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on Friday, Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This year marks the second consecutive season CFISD has advanced two teams to the regional championship round and fourth time in five years the district has had a representative reach the round.
Cy-Fair and Langham Creek High School met in the Division II Region III championship last season, with the Bobcats winning on the way to the state title. Cypress Ridge High School reached the 2016 Division II region championship round, while Cypress Ranch High School played for the Division I state title in 2014.
