On the boys’ side, Cypress Creek High School posted a two-day score of 599 (292-307) to place second at the District 17-6A Boys’ Golf Tournament, held March 31-April 1 at Cypress Lakes Golf Club.
All qualifying teams and medalists advance to the Region III-6A Golf Tournament at Gleannloch Pines Golf Club (19393 Champion Forest Drive) in Spring. The girls’ tournament is set for April 19-20, while the boys’ tournament is set for April 21-22.
Cy-Fair girls’ golfers who comprised the runner-up total were Ashleen Kaur (82-76–158), Ai-My Pham (90-78–168), Hailey Vardeman (85-91–176), Emily Axelrod (115-112–227) and Emma Herold (131-118–249).
Kaur finished second overall among individual finishers in the tournament, while Pham and Vardeman placed sixth and eighth, respectively.
“We relied on all teammates to make it to regionals,” said Donna Benotti, Cy-Fair head girls’ golf coach. “Our fierce leader, Ashleen Kaur, had two eagles to produce a 76 and help keep our team score low. Hailey Vardeman shot an 85 on day one and Ai-My Pham shot a 78 on day two, and both scores helped us have an edge. We struggled on the greens but bounced back with that ‘BFND’ clutch to pull off a three-stroke lead to qualify.”
Spring Branch ISD’s Memorial High School (327-321–648) won the district title, while Stratford High School’s Ashton Lombard and Sarah Schwartz earned the two medalist spots after placing fifth and seventh individually.
Cypress Creek High School sophomore Rex Hargrove shot a two-round total of 142 at the District 17-6A Boys’ Golf Tournament, held March 31-April 1 at Cypress Lakes Golf Club. Hargrove won the individual championship, while Gilbert and Hoyt tied for sixth to give the Cougars three finishers in the top 10.
“The golf team played really well on the first day of the district tournament,” said Scott Holloway, Cypress Creek head boys’ golf coach. “Jackson Gilbert and Braeden Hoyt led the team and Tim Mauldin had his best round of the season with a 78. On day two, the wind picked up and proved to be a more challenging course. Rex Hargrove shot the best round of any player in the field and the rest of the team really battled the conditions to finish in second place. Paul Prim had a key par on the 17th hole to secure the one-shot lead over Stratford."
Memorial (299-293–592) won the team championship, while Cy-Fair High School junior Thomas Pickrell (72-72–144) and Stratford’s Chris Blaine earned the two medalist spots after tying for third individually.
