April 11, 2018—Angelica Aulbaugh didn’t expect anything and – like her classmates and Cy-Fair High School Teacher Mitchell Lawyer – was caught off guard when KPRC anchor Owen Conflenti and a cameraman walked into the room in the middle of a College Algebra lesson on April 9.
Conflenti then read from a giant white sign he was holding, asking for Aulbaugh to come to the front of the class. As the senior stood, Conflenti turned the sign around, revealing a check for $2,500 and announcing Aulbaugh as 1 of 20 recipients of a KPRC Texas Mattress Makers Senior Scholarship.

Making the surprise even more special was Aulbaugh’s family – parents Trent and Pamela and younger sister and Cy-Fair freshman Courtney – on hand to join in on the celebration.
“When you can bring the family into the mix, it changes things,” Conflenti said. “It’s one thing to hand out money. But the idea that the kid has no idea what’s going on and who know how many scholarships for which they’ve applied or how they find out about them, to go in with all the fanfare is just so cool.”
Aulbaugh will be attending Texas A&M University and plans to study animal science, putting her passion and nurturing for animals into motion academically and professionally. The passion comes from a long-standing relationship with animals, one she turned into countless volunteer hours as well.

She’s volunteered at the Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter and assisted fellow Cy-Fair students in bonding activities at the Harris County Animal Shelter. Aulbaugh has fostered dogs, helping care for one that was pregnant and gave birth to five puppies, and helping another just after Hurricane Harvey.
“Ever since I was little, I’ve had dogs and felt special connections to them,” she said. “I started volunteering at Harris County Animal Shelter and I loved it, so I decided to be a veterinarian.”
