Feb. 11, 2020—The Cypress Ranch High School boys’ wrestling team repeated as champion, while the Cypress Park High School girls’ team won its first in Class 6A to cap the District 10-6A Championships on Feb. 6-7 at the Berry Center.

Cypress Ranch clinched the boys’ title with 243.5 team points, as the Mustangs edged runner-up Cypress Woods (239) and third-place Cypress Park (176) high schools. The Mustangs’ point total was nearly 40 points more than last season’s winning amount.

“We suffered some losses this season…but the guys that were here really stepped up,” said John Lopez, Cypress Ranch’s first-year head coach. “We had guys who have been out for two weeks step back in and we had guys who haven’t been on the mat in two months. They won big here, getting the pins when they needed and getting those points.”

That was the only thing we had in mind,” said Pete Longoria, Cypress Park head coach. “Last year, we started out so strong on the first day and didn’t perform on the second day. So this year, we talked from day one on being district champions.”
