“It was a tough match,” LaMette said of the state championship. “I knew she was a good player and I knew I had to bring my ‘A’ game but I came up a little short today.”

The state appearance is LaMette’s third in as many years. She and Cypress Ranch senior Dylan Payne reached the mixed doubles semifinals in 2016, while LaMette teamed with senior Varun Thachil to capture the 2017 Class 6A mixed doubles state championship.

“All these experiences mean so much to me,” said LaMette, who also helped lead the Mustangs to a runner-up finish in the Team Tennis state championships in the fall.

Added Cypress Ranch head coach Minh Phan: “When I walked off the court with her, she was a little bit disappointed because she really wanted it. She said, ‘I’m going to come back next year.’”

Payne teamed with junior Abhi Ramireddy and the two returned to state for a second consecutive year. They lost in the Class 6A boys’ doubles quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-3, to Austin Westlake’s Roger Chou and Cyrus Sabharwal, who captured the state crown.
