April 16, 2019—CFISD boys’ and girls’ track and field athletes qualified for the area track and field meet after placing in the top four of their respective events at the District 17-6A Championships held April 2-4 at Cypress Falls High School.

In the boys’ competition, Cypress Ridge High School won in convincing fashion, as the Rams totaled 174 points to claim the team championship followed by runner-up Cypress Falls High School (100 points) and Memorial High School (97 points) of Spring Branch ISD.

“They made a statement because my guys told me that their goal is to win the state track meet,” said Patrick Jacobs, Cypress Ridge boys’ track and field coach, of a group that advanced to the UIL State Track and Field Championship last in the 400- and 800-meter relays. “Not to go to the state track meet, but to win the state track meet. We still have a long way to go and a lot of things to fix, but I know with the hard work they’re doing, we’ll have a chance to be at state fighting for that championship.”

Cypress Falls won the girls’ team title after finishing second in 2018. The Golden Eagles totaled 158 points for the championship, finishing ahead of second-place Stratford High School (127 points) and Cypress Ridge (88 points).

“The girls performed very well,” said Trampas Goodwin, Cypress Falls girls’ track and field coach. “Some did what I expected but a lot of them did a lot of unexpected and that’s what came through for us. It’s all the hard work in practice and dedication in the classroom.”

The top four individuals in each event from both District 17-6A and District 18-6A will compete in the area meet, scheduled for April 17 at Stratford High School (14555 Fern Drive). The top four finishers from each event at the area meet will advance to the Region III-6A Championships, set for April 26-27 at Clear Creek ISD’s Challenger Columbia Stadium (1955 W. Nasa Blvd.) in Webster.

Cypress Falls High School senior Jada Chambers finished second in the long jump at the District 17-6A Track and Field Championships. Chambers also won the 200- and 400-meter dashes to help lead the Golden Eagles to the team championship.
