June 27, 2019—Cypress Ridge High School Air Force JROTC instructor SMSgt. James Core III was recently recognized as an AFJROTC Instructor of the Year honoree for the 2018-2019 school year. He received the Aerospace Science Instructor of the Year award, as announced by the AFJROTC Headquarters on June 12.
The award program recognizes AFJROTC instructors for their work and outstanding achievement in the development of cadets. Core is joined by Baltimore Polytech Institute’s retired Col. Gina Humble, who received the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor of the Year award.
When interviewed for the recognition, both honorees reflected on a singular theme of taking care of cadets.
“I start off each class with a quote of the day and have a few cadets give me their thoughts on it and how it can apply to them and others,” Core said.
Core served 28 years in the Air Force, including positions as a personnel manager and senior ROTC cadre member. He worked at a consulting firm after retiring from the Air Force, and has spent the last seven years at Cypress Ridge.
He chose to become an AFJROTC instructor to continue mentoring youth in his community.
“As an instructor, I felt I could have a great impact on young people’s lives as they matriculate through high school,” said Core, who served as a mentor at his church before joining CFISD.
The AFJROTC unit at Cypress Ridge (TX-20028) has been honored with a Distinguished Unit Award in each of the last three years. That includes being among 102 units across the United States to receive the 2018-2019 Distinguished Unit Award with Merit. Core was also honored in May as Cypress Ridge’s Teacher of the Year.
“He teaches leadership values that extend beyond the person, but extends to giving back to our community,” said Stephanie Meshell, Cypress Ridge principal. “The lessons taught in our AFJROTC program help our students be successful, no matter their career choice. SMSgt. Core is a true servant leader and we are blessed to have him serve our Cypress Ridge community.”
Core will be presented with his award at the 2019 Air Force Sergeants Association Convention in August in San Antonio.
