April 17, 2018—CFISD boys’ and girls’ track and field athletes qualified for the area track and field meet after placing in the top four of their respective events at the District 17-6A Championships held April 9-10 and 12 at Jersey Village High School.

In the girls’ competition, Cypress Springs High School won its fifth consecutive team championship with 170 points followed by runner-up Cypress Woods High School (110 points) and third-place Cypress Ranch High School (96 points).

Cypress Springs High School senior Monique Spruill swept the distance events at the District 17-6A Track and Field Championships, winning both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs to also help lead the Panthers to the girls’ team title.

“It shows that the championship mindset is becoming a part of our DNA,” said Ruqayya Gibson, Cypress Springs head track and field coach, of capturing five titles in a row. “This season was filled with ups and downs because we lost our largest senior class last year and with that, a lot of our leaders. The girls had to search deep within themselves and realize that the baton had been passed to them and they must stand up and be the leaders.”

Cypress Woods won the boys’ team title after finishing second in 2016 and 2017. The Wildcats totaled 101 points for the championship, finishing ahead of second-place Cypress Falls High School (85 points) and Cy-Fair High School (82 points).

“We as a coaching staff are proud of all of our boys’ track teams,” said Mike Zachos, Cypress Woods head track and field coach. “We were able to win all divisions this year – not just varsity. Our team fought throughout the meet and kids competed with injuries with that district title as their motivation.”

The Cypress Woods High School boys’ track and field team won the District 17-6A team title. The Wildcats finished with 101 total points.

The top four individuals in each event from both District 17-6A and District 18-6A will compete in the area meet, scheduled for April 19 at Houston ISD’s Barnett Stadium (6800 Fairway Drive). The top four finishers from each event at the area meet will advance to the Region III-6A Championships, set for April 27-28 at Humble ISD’s Turner Stadium.

“I tell our guys we don’t care about times posted or rankings. Just production,” Zachos said. “We are looking forward to area.”

Cy-Fair High School senior Eddie Sumler (fourth from left) leads the boys’ 200-meter dash finals as the field approaches the finish. Sumler won the race with a time of 20.992, edging Cypress Ridge High School junior Cameron Crowe (fourth from right).

Said Gibson: “We are excited to tackle the next round of competition. We have to take it one round at a time (and) one race at a time. We are confident that we will get to the big meet and have a shot but we must stay focused and keep our eyes on the ball.”
