Dec. 18, 2017—Cypress Falls High School LIFE Skills students have collected $6,883.17 worth of coupons to give back to troops and their families, continuing this fundraiser through the school year to help aide in financial difficulties that can come with being in the military and stationed in other countries.
“The LIFE Skills classes are learning a lot from this activity and are also learning what it means to give,” LIFE Skills Teacher Robin Murphy said of Coupons for Troops.
LIFE is an acronym for “Learning in Functional Environments” and the LIFE Skills program helps prepare students with severe disabilities to participate/function as productively and independently as possible in critical natural environments.

By collecting coupons, the students are taken beyond the classroom and make connections in the real world. With this they can help other people and learn from the experience. The donations come from Cypress Falls staff and are put in a decorated box in the teachers’ workroom for the students to later cut out for their cause.
“The activity for Coupons for Troops is important, because it allows the students in LIFE Skills to learn how it feels to give of their time to help others,” Murphy said of the second-year program. “They also learn what a person serving our country does by the information we provide to the students about where the coupons are going.”
When citizens join the military, they take on the responsibility of protecting the country. But for some upon completing their service, there are struggles and at times, few options, to help them assimilate back into civilian life. That can include finances.
With Coupons for Troops, the total will be mailed to Support Our Troops’ Troopons program, which assists military families by giving them food, non-food, baby and pet manufacturer coupons to help financially.
“I think it’s cool they are doing that because sometimes some troops come out of the military with nothing,” Cypress Falls junior Idalia Ramirez said. “I don’t know how it happens but it does and it’s sad.”
Coupons can be an easy and priceless way to give back and support members of the military and their families with all they endure to help keep the United States safe. The program has increased in its second year and will continue through the rest of the school year.
“My husband is a veteran and I know firsthand the sacrifice our military families make for each of us everyday,” Murphy said. “I sure hope it does increase and we see even greater numbers of coupon dollars going overseas.”
