Cypress Park successful in first-ever district wrestling tournament

Feb. 10, 2017—The Cypress Park High School wrestling team competed in its first-ever District 12-5A Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 9 at Foster High School. The varsity boys’ team finished in eighth place, while the varsity girls’ team finished in fourth place.

The junior varsity boys finished in second place. The Tigers accomplished this feat despite having only ninth-grade students in the school’s inaugural year. 

The following student athletes placed among the top five in their respective weight classes:

Boys

  • Armando Martinez, fourth place, 120 pounds (regional qualifier);
  • Sergio Small, fourth place, 152 pounds (regional qualifier); and
  • Angel Garcia, third place, 285 pounds (regional qualifier).

Girls

  • Dana Ruiz, third place, 95 pounds (regional qualifier);
  • Endygo Scott, second place, 102 pounds (regional qualifier);
  • Lauryn Brown, fifth place, 128 pounds; and
  • Stephanie Montes De Oca, second place, 138 pounds (regional qualifier).

“It is incredible where these freshmen kids have come from in just four months,” said Pete Longoria, Cypress Park head wrestling coach. “They all started from having no knowledge of the sport to falling in love with it.” 

Cypress Park wrestlers will next compete in the Region III-5A Wrestling Tournament Feb. 17-18 at Bryan High School (3450 Campus Drive).
