Sept. 17, 2018—Cypress Ranch High School senior Anushka Gupta has been selected as executive chair and member of the Texas Gulf Coast Region Red Cross Youth Service Council for the 2018-2019 school year, marking the third consecutive season in which she’s served on the council.

Gupta is one of nine student leaders from across the Houston area selected for 2018-2019.

She served as the council’s communications chair for 2016-2017 and as logistics chair in 2017-2018.

In her role, Gupta and her fellow officers will work with the youth service council to further the mission of the Red Cross through volunteering, service projects and fundraising. The council works with Red Cross clubs across Houston to help empower students and faculty with knowledge of the Red Cross while also providing training to club officers.

Gupta founded and serves as president of the Red Cross Club at Cypress Ranch, and helped students start a Red Cross Club at Bridgeland High School. She’s earned accolades for her service, winning Presidential Service awards as a sophomore and junior for community service and volunteering with the Red Cross.

Clubs are encouraged to plan and execute at least two service projects during the year (one in the fall and one in the spring). Throughout the length of the projects, participants perform volunteer work on behalf of the American Red Cross, which encourages projects directly related to its many lines of service such as:

  • disaster readiness and response;
  • international relief and immunization;
  • health and safety training; and
  • military services.

“I’m honored to have been selected for this position because it allows me to empower other youth members to help people in need,” Gupta said. “In being involved with the Red Cross, I have developed a strong work ethic as I maintain the club at Cy Ranch as well as helped start a club at Bridgeland High School and work on projects for the Texas Gulf Coast Region. I have also become more passionate about serving the community as I witnessed the impact that this organization has on those affected by disasters.”
