The Denton Guyer Wildcats hold the championship trophy after beating Waxahachie to win the eighth annual Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational on Dec. 9 at the Berry Center.
Dec. 11, 2017—Denton Guyer High School defeated Waxahachie High School, 77-71, in the championship game of the eighth annual Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational on Dec. 9 at the Berry Center to win the talent-rich, 24-team tournament.
Cypress Falls and Cypress Creek high schools were CFISD’s highest-finishing participants, placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
“On the district side, this shows just how competitive it is in our district. On every Tuesday and Friday, you have to battle,” Cypress Falls Head Coach Richard Flores said. “It speaks to the talent level…and for the team, it allows us to build on our depth and start defining who we are against really good competition. As you went into each of these games and got past the first round, you had to be ready to play.”

Austin Westlake beat Cypress Falls, 69-49, to place third in the tournament. Cypress Creek defeated Galena Park North Shore, 62-47, in the fifth-place game. San Antonio Wagner topped Spring Dekaney, 59-55, in the seventh-place game.
Killeen Shoemaker won the consolation championship by outlasting Cypress Lakes 59-55 in double overtime.

”I definitely think it’s one of the best tournaments in Texas,” Denton Guyer Head Coach Grant Long said. “To have this much talent in there, not to mention the facilities and the hospitality, it was just phenomenal. And the community too – it was great.”
The three-day tournament benefitting the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation was sponsored by Houston Methodist Hospital. Other sponsors included:
Killeen Shoemaker senior guard Du’Wain Thomas goes to the basket in the consolation championship game against Cypress Lakes High School on Dec. 9. Shoemaker won 59-55 in double overtime.
Student groups from Francone Elementary School, Cypress Lakes High School and Dance Central provided halftime entertainment for Saturday’s games.
Cypress Creek forward Marcus Merchant goes up for a slam-dunk in the fifth-place game of the Cy-Hoops Invitational on Dec. 9. The senior helped lead the Cougars to a 62-47 win over Galena Park North Shore to claim fifth place.
