Nov. 5, 2019—The Bridgeland High School girls cross country team and Bridgeland junior runner Randy Smith qualified for the UIL Cross Country State Championships at the Region II-6A Cross Country Championships on Oct. 28 at Jesse Owens Memorial Complex in Dallas.

For the second consecutive year, the Bridgeland girls placed third at the regional championships with an overall score of 112 and two runners finishing in the top 15. Sophomore Cassidy Graham lead the Bears, placing fifth overall (18:13.89) and sophomore Madeleine Wilson finished 13th overall (18:33.40), both earning all-region recognitions. Also running for the Bears were sophomore Allison Millan (33rd, 18:57.51), junior Athena Reyna (39th, 19:04.13), sophomore Elisa Grillo (41st, 19:08.04), freshman Brook Hensley (46th, 19:17.54) and senior Haley Williams (48th, 19:22.02).

“I’m proud of the girls for their third-place finish,” said Tom Kennedy, Bridgeland girls’ cross country head coach. “We had a bit of adversity with our number two from district cutting her arm on a flagpole mid-race, but the team still managed to qualify and Cassidy Graham and Maddie Wilson both earned all-region status. I’m looking forward to the ladies putting together a complete race at state because I know they’re capable of improving on last year’s state performance.”

Bridgeland runner Randy Smith was the only male runner from CFISD to qualify for the UIL Cross Country State Championships finishing 18th overall (15:37.18).

“The Texas 6A state meet is extremely difficult to qualify for and while our goal was to get the entire team to state, the silver lining to not reaching that goal is to have Randy qualify as an individual,” said Kevin Waters, Bridgeland boys cross country head coach. “He had a really good race at regionals and has worked extremely hard the entire season to get where he is now as the only male harrier from CFISD that qualified for the state meet this year. The entire varsity squad has stayed on to help him train and all of us are really excited to see Randy put it all on the line one more time against the best in the state in Round Rock Saturday afternoon.”

The UIL Cross County State Championships will be held Nov. 9 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
