Nov. 7, 2019—The CFISD Police Department inducted 11 cadets into its second class of Explorer Post No. 0112 during a ceremony at the CFISD police station on Nov. 2. Part of the Learning for Life Corporation’s Exploring program, the post consists of CFISD high school students who are interested in a career in law enforcement or a related field.

Through guidance from CFISD police officers, the young men and women will learn about the criminal justice system through training, classroom instruction and competitions. The 11 cadets will join nine Advanced Explorers, who completed the inaugural year of the program in 2018-2019.

“Going into our second year we’re very happy with our retention of nine original Explorers and adding 11,” said Officer Ramón Hernandez Jr., the Explorers’ commanding officer. “The numbers will make us one of the biggest posts in Harris County. Seeing the enthusiasm of these students makes it worthwhile. We’re happy this year that we are getting some grant funding to help sustain the program and build it toward a competition level.”

In addition to regular instruction and training, the cadets will participate in competitions against other Explorer posts throughout the year.

Prior to founding the post in 2018, Hernandez oversaw a similar program while he was a campus officer at Watkins Middle School called the Bulldog Marshals that soon transformed into a districtwide initiative.

Interested students in grades 9-12 completed an application and underwent an interview process before being accepted.

Ashley Rodriguez, Cypress Ridge High School senior and Advanced Explorer, aspires to be a criminal psychologist or crime scene investigator. She said she enjoyed her first year in the program.

“It’s been a great experience. I’ve learned a lot of different things I normally wouldn’t learn in the classroom,” she said. “I have learned how to investigate crime scenes, negotiate with people and other different hands-on things. I hope to learn more things this year that will hopefully help me prepare for the law enforcement field.”

The induction ceremony featured guest speaker appearances by CFISD Board Trustee Julie Hinaman and District 135 State. Rep. Jon Rosenthal.

CFISD Police Officer Caleb Potter speaks with students who are part of the Advanced Explorer group that joined the program in 2018-2019.

“I am really excited about this program. I’m thrilled to see so many young people who are interested in law enforcement,” Rep. Rosenthal said. “This department does such a good job, and I haven’t heard anybody who has anything negative to say about our CFISD school district police. That’s a testament to the leadership of Chief [Eric] Mendez. As long as I’m in office, I will be a friend of this department for sure.”

Officer Hernandez said he looks forward to seeing the student cadets fulfill their potential.

“Speaking for CFISD, this generation is stepping up,” he said. “By their acts and deeds and wanting to participate in these types of programs, they are exemplifying what citizenship is, what character is and more importantly, that they want to build a better community. It actually motivates me to be a better officer every day.”
