June 18, 2019—Emery Elementary School has received a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase Schools award for the 2018-2019 school year, earning the distinguished honor for the third year in a row. The recognition from the Flippen Group honors campuses that go above and beyond in building an environment where students and staff feel safe and connected.

Schools to earn the award were chosen based on criteria that includes survey results measuring staff implementation of Capturing Kids’ Hearts processes, campus culture and climate, significant improvement in attendance, discipline and academics, and students’ attitudes and connectedness to the campus. Flippen Group representatives visited nominated campuses to observe, collect data and interview students, parents and staff.

Flippen Group teams then measured collected data and information to determine which schools met the criteria for Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase Schools awards.

Emery joined 201 other campuses and two districts across America in earning the distinction. The Flippen Group is a national professional development provider that uses research-based tools and processes combined with training to work with and help improve schools, companies, sports teams and non-profit organizations.

“Our Emery family was super excited about being named a Capturing Kids' Hearts National Showcase School for a third year in a row,” said Michelle Merricks, Emery Elementary School principal. “At Emery, everyone works hard to model a variety of strategies to help our students succeed on a daily basis. We start the day by greeting our students, reviewing our class social contracts, giving each other affirmations throughout the day and learning to deal with situations by having class meetings to celebrate and to talk about situations.”

Award winners will each receive a banner to display or a sticker to add to a banner already earned as well as public recognition of the distinction.

“Capturing Kids’ Hearts is a way of life at Emery,” Merricks said. “We want our students to utilize the CKH philosophy today, tomorrow and throughout their lives. We couldn't be more proud of our Emery Eagles.”
