March 2, 2017—Members of Memorial Lodge No. 1298 visited Fiest Elementary School on March 2 to surprise fourth-grade teacher Susan Acree with a teaching excellence award.
The Freemason’s fraternity presented Acree, an English/language arts instructor, with its Mirabeau B. Lamar Award recognizing distinguished achievements in education. The presentation came during Texas Public Schools Week and is named after the “father of Texas education,” Mirabeau B. Lamar.

Acree received a certificate and a medal, and was invited to attend a recognition dinner in her honor that evening.
“Masonic organizations have long been supporters of public education,” said Jim Acree, worship master for the Memorial Lodge. “In the early days most lodges were two-story buildings. The lodge met on the second floor and local churches and schools met on the ground floor. We are proud to present this recognition on behalf of an outstanding educator in Ms. Acree.”

Acree, a 26-year veteran of public education, said she was shocked to receive the award.
“I’m very surprised, honored and overwhelmed,” she said. “The recognition is nice, especially knowing that I have three kids who are also public educators. It’s nice to know they love what I do.”
