Football players qualify for THSCA Academic All-State teams

Dec. 19, 2017—Football players representing 10 CFISD high school qualified for the Texas Army National Guard/Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) 2017 Academic All-State Football Team, released Dec. 1.

To be considered for academic all-state recognition, students were required to meet the following standards:

  • be classified as a senior;
  • be an athlete, student trainer or manager who finished the season in good standing;
  • have an overall grade-point average of 92 or more; and
  • possess strong moral character.

The THSCA also considers each student’s class rank, SAT and/or ACT score when reviewing nominations. Students can earn First Team, Second Team, Honorable Mention and Elite Team status. Honorees must have near-perfect scores in all categories to make the Elite Team.

“The CFISD Athletic Department is very proud of the 52 young men that qualified for this team. It shows they understand and place a high value on what it means to be a student athlete,” said Kirk Eaton, associate director of athletics. “We are very appreciative of the support they get from their families, coaches, teachers, and administration when it comes to balancing academics and athletics.”

The following CFISD students made the Academic All-State teams:

First Team Academic All-State

  • Cy-Fair: Patrick Atkinson, David Cole, Nathan Franz, Puneet Jain and Jacob Satterfield;
  • Cypress Creek: Carl Benson;
  • Cypress Falls: Kevin Dat Nguyen;
  • Cypress Ranch: Alexander O’Connor and Riley Zepeda;
  • Cypress Ridge: Sloan Selmon;
  • Cypress Springs: Christopher Schilling and Luis Zelaya;
  • Jersey Village: Blake Johnson; and
  • Langham Creek: Brad Pinkerton.

Second Team Academic All-State

  • Cy-Fair: Cameron Arnold and Aidan Morrison;
  • Cypress Creek: Pierce Bondurant and Mateo Renteria;
  • Cypress Falls: Corbin Kullberg, Kevin Ngoc Nguyen, Jordan Ramos and Josquin Underwood;
  • Cypress Lakes: Tyler Dudley;
  • Cypress Ranch: Michael Knapton and Nicholas Spencer;
  • Cypress Woods: Ryan Gilcrease, Zach Harris and Jake Johnson;
  • Jersey Village: Brandon Bishop and John Gilbert; and
  • Langham Creek: Elias Berkel, Andrew Burns, Niko Forlini, Jeremy Grail, Josh Mendez, Nick Ojonta, Franchesko Ravines and Anthony Thompson.

Honorable Mention Academic All-State

  • Cy-Fair: Peyton Lewis;
  • Cypress Falls: Flammond Quinn;
  • Cypress Ranch: Landon Koleci;
  • Cypress Springs: Taye Barber and Alexis Barrios;
  • Cypress Woods: Jack Barrientez, Greg Blaser, Quincy Boone, Dallas Caldwell, Tim Dendy and Jacob Kainer;
  • Jersey Village: Nicholas Gorrie; and
  • Langham Creek: Ricardo Alvarado and Zachary Wardlow.
