Four girls’ basketball teams win, set up all-CFISD region quarterfinals

Cypress Creek High School defeated Fort Bend Travis 70-47 in the area round Feb. 15 to advance to the Region III-6A quarterfinals.

Feb. 16, 2018—All four CFISD girls’ basketball teams swept through the first two rounds of the Class 6A playoffs, setting up two all-CFISD regional quarterfinal matchups to be held Feb. 20 at the Berry Center (8877 Barker Cypress).

Here’s a summary of each team’s playoff road:

  • District champion Cypress Creek High School defeated Houston Lamar 77-44 in the bi-district round Feb. 12 and followed with a 70-47 win over Fort Bend Travis in the around round Feb. 15;
  • Second seed Cypress Ranch High School beat Houston Heights 90-49 in a bi-district playoff Feb. 12 and then defeated Fort Bend Hightower 68-51 in the area round Feb. 15;
  • Third seed Jersey Village High School defeated Houston Bellaire 67-48 in the bi-district round Feb. 12 and followed by beating Katy Seven Lakes 68-46 in the area round Feb. 16; and
  • Fourth seed Langham Creek High School beat Houston Westside 59-50 in a bi-district playoff Feb. 12 and then defeated Fort Bend Ridge Point 72-62 in the area round Feb. 15.

Following a 68-51 win over Fort Bend Hightower in the area round, Cypress Ranch High School returns to the Region III-6A quarterfinals after reaching the UIL state tournament in 2017.

The third-round doubleheader begins with Cypress Ranch facing Jersey Village at 6 p.m. The teams split their series in district play, with each winning on its home floor.

Cypress Creek and Langham Creek will follow with their game scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Cougars won the only meeting between the two teams in league play.

Jersey Village High School has victories over Houston Bellaire and Katy Seven Lakes in the Class 6A postseason and will face Cypress Ranch in the Region III quarterfinals.

“We are so proud of our four playoff teams,” said Ray Zepeda, CFISD director of athletics. “They have each played with the type of competitive excellence that we have come to expect of CFISD female basketball programs. I certainly hope that the Cypress community comes out to support these four outstanding programs on Tuesday night as they play for spots in the regional tournament.”

Tickets for both playoff games will be sold at the gate for $5 each (adults and students).

Langham Creek High School defeated Fort Bend Ridge Point 72-62 in the area round Feb. 15, sending the Lobos to the Region III-6A quarterfinals for a second consecutive season.
