Seeing them now is like seeing them yesterday,” said Koern, who is in her 29th year at Cy-Fair High School. “They were my kids before I had kids and this is about my students. They inspire me every day. I feel this joy to see them create and be successful.

“Watching them grow and succeed is my greatest joy.”

Koern’s guidance has made an impact on former students. Lead Theatre Director C. Matt Buchanan and Tech Director Eric Oneacre both graduated from Cy-Fair High School before returning to work with their former director.

“When I think of the best teacher I ever had, it was Mrs. Koern,” Green said. “She was basically a second mom to all of us. She encouraged us to be our best selves and whatever we wanted to do, she believed in us wholeheartedly.”

As part of the award, Koern will receive a $250 Visa gift card and $250 Ashley Furniture gift card. In addition, Cy-Fair High School was awarded a $2,500 voucher to Ashley Furniture, which will be used to help decorate the teachers’ lounge.

“Kids are fun, kids are inspiring and kids are energy,” Koern said. “And when you let them know that you believe in them, they will bring it to the table.”
