Lancaster tops Cy Springs to win Cy-Hoops Invitational

Dec. 10, 2018—Lancaster High School defeated Cypress Springs High School, 73-60, in the championship game of the ninth annual Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational on Dec. 8 at the Berry Center to win the 24-team tournament.

The Panthers’ runner-up placement was CFISD’s best tournament finish since 2016, when Cypress Falls High School took second in the tournament.

“I thought we got better and better as the tournament went on,” said Larry Boykin, Cypress Springs head coach. “They battled hard through the last game. It was all heart.”

Cypress Springs defeated Cypress Creek (62-59), Duncanville (76-66) and Port Arthur Memorial (53-52) to reach the final game.

CFISD opponents Langham Creek and Cypress Creek high schools met in the consolation final of the Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational. The Cougars defeated the Lobos, 73-71, to win the consolation championship.

Port Arthur Memorial placed third in the tournament. Cypress Creek won the consolation championship by beating Langham Creek, 73-71.

Lancaster junior guard Mike Miles was named the Cy-Hoops Invitational MVP.

“Any time you win a tournament like this, it’s definitely a launching pad for the rest of the season,” said Ferrin Douglas, Lancaster head coach. “Hats off to Cy Springs; they played three games today and they are some tough kids. This was a great tournament with some stiff competition. Our kids enjoyed it and I hope they’ll have us back next year.”
