Aug. 21, 2015—Staff members at Rennell Elementary School reacted with shocked excitement at Principal Leslie Thomas’s surprise announcement on Aug. 20 that the campus would enter into an Adopt-a-School partnership with both H-E-B Market at Tuckerton and Lone Star College—CyFair.

CFISD’s Adopt-a-School program pairs schools with community and business partners to utilize the resources of the community to strengthen and enrich the quality of education for students.

Thomas shared the news with her staff, tying it into the school’s annual theme of Rennell Redhawks Step It Up.

“We talked about how that meant not just stepping it up as a staff, but also the need to step it up with the community,” Thomas said. “It fits so perfectly. To have a double adoption like this with these large organizations is incredible. We look forward to long relationships with both of them.”

H-E-B Market at Tuckerton is scheduled to open Sept. 2 at the intersection of Tuckerton and Fry roads. Unit director Greg Bennion said he is proud for his store to enter into the relationship with a local elementary school, aligning with H-E-B’s annual contribution of $10 million to education programs.

“One of the things I like most about H-E-B is it is a company that believes in giving back,” said Bennion, a seven-year company veteran. “We understand that kids are the future, so we are especially excited to get in on the elementary level.”

Bennion said the store plans to donate time to students as well as resources to enhance education at the school.

Lone Star plans to continue along its community partnerships core value to assist Rennell in growing college- and career-ready students.

“Our faculty and staff are always looking for ways they can give back,” said Michelle Tran, Lone Star College—CyFair executive director of college relations. “The proximity of being close to the school allows our employees to easily come here and volunteer.

“We announced the adoption at our convocation [Aug. 19] and I’ve already been contacted by faculty and staff asking how they can get involved, if the school needs tutoring and mentors. Everyone is over the moon about this and can’t wait to help,” Tran said.
