May 15, 2015—For the third consecutive year, members of the Cy-Fair American Federation of Teachers (AFT) treated CFPD police officers to a free breakfast on May 15 as a token of appreciation for their service to the staff and students of Cypress-Fairbanks ISD.

The breakfast was available after roll call on the morning of National Peace Officers Memorial Day, which falls during National Police Week—a federal recognition week established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962.

“This is near and dear to my heart,” said Cy-Fair AFT President Nikki Cowart, whose father was a former assistant police chief. “We’re so excited that the district has incorporated their own police department into the Cy-Fair family, and we wanted to recognize them for their service.”

Cowart and Cy-Fair AFT field organizer Ben Brinkman delivered Taco Cabana breakfast food and orange juice to the appreciative officers.

“We promised we would not bring donuts,” Cowart joked. “Breakfast burritos seem to be the winner.”

Chief of police Alan Bragg led the officers in a moment of silence during the morning roll call to remember fallen officers. Following breakfast, Chief Bragg and members of his command staff saluted the American flag as it was lowered to half-staff.

“The recognition is important to all of us, not just from the local AFT but our entire district and community,” Chief Bragg said. “We all want to honor and remember those officers who have given their lives, because they made it possible for us to lead now.”
