Dec. 15, 2013—School district partners Faith Assembly Church and Academy Sports and Outdoors made the season brighter for nearly 1,000 Reed Elementary School students through a bike giveaway following Faith Assembly’s Sunday morning services.

Faith Assembly purchased 955 bicycles—as well as tricycles and wagons for special-needs students—through a discounted rate from Academy, and staff members announced the bike giveaway to Reed students during lunch on Thursday. Church members and volunteers unloaded and assembled the bikes on Friday and Saturday.

At the conclusion of each service on Sunday, half of Reed’s student population walked outside to find a shiny new bicycle waiting for them on the church lawn.

“This is a very special occasion,” said Reed principal Kandy Bond, who addressed the Faith Assembly congregation after service. “It reminds me that there is a purpose and a plan for all of us and that people come into our lives for a reason. After they first heard the announcement, some of the students were probably confused because nothing is ever free in life. Faith Assembly has shown our teachers, staff and Reed family that there is still kindness and generosity in this world. We truly, truly appreciate it.”

Faith Assembly, which adopted Reed through the Partners in Education (PIE) Adopt-a-School program in 2010, chose the bicycle donation as a way to create an unforgettable Christmas gift for the families of Reed Elementary.

“There are no words to describe this,” said Faith Assembly lead pastor Jason Taylor. “When it comes to doing missional community work, it’s usually just a small pocket of people who get to experience it. But when your hands are building it, and when you’re sowing your time and your energy and your heart, it means more. Our family is a part of every one of these bikes.”

Taylor said the church is planning on inviting the Reed students back in January for a “30-day tune-up” on the bikes during a Faith Assembly block party, and is tentatively planning a “Parade of Bikes” during a Fourth of July celebration at the church.
