Feb. 18, 2020—Salyards Middle School seventh grade student Shawn Ray won first place by correctly spelling the word irascible in the 19th round of the annual districtwide Middle School Spelling Bee, held Feb. 13 at the Berry Center. The win was a second consecutive for Ray, who won in the 24th round last year.
Cook Middle School sixth grade student Benjamin Trevino was the runner-up participant. Both Ray and Trevino will compete in the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee, which is scheduled to be televised Feb. 29 from the University of Houston.
“Our middle school spellers were at their very best on Thursday evening, which made our district spelling bee a resounding success,” said Sarah Price, CFISD secondary English technology curriculum coach. “The 3 1/2-hour competition went to round 18 before we had a winner followed by a spell-off for second place. All of the students were well prepared and should be very proud of their accomplishments. Thanks to our parents and teachers as well for their support of our middle school spellers. I applaud all of our participants for their hard work and dedication and look forward to seeing our CFISD champions at the Houston area bee at the end of the month.”
