Spillane, Anthony, Salyards, Hamilton win district cross country titles

Spillane Middle School won the eighth-grade boys cross country team title with 49 points on Oct. 18 at Cypress Woods High School.

Oct. 26, 2017—Four different middle schools won team championships at the CFISD Middle School Cross Country Meet, held Oct. 18 at Cypress Woods High School.

Leading the quartet was Salyards Middle School, which claimed the seventh-grade boys team crown to go with runner-up finishes in the other three divisions.

Anthony Middle School won the eighth-grade girls cross country team championship with a score of 39 points on Oct. 18 at Cypress Woods High School.

Spillane Middle School won the eighth-grade boys’ race with a team score of 49, followed by runner-up Salyards (92) and third-place Smith (104).

The runners comprising Spillane’s first-place score were Alex Chambliss (fifth overall, 11:23.04), Luke Abad (eighth overall, 11:32.17), Nathan Garr (ninth overall, 11:33.26), Tristan Russell (11th, 11:39.55) and Jack Mullally (16th, 11:49.42).

The top 10 individual eighth-grade boys were as follows:

  1. John Carswell, Anthony (10:46.15);
  2. Devon Simmons, Arnold (10:52.83);
  3. Julian Martinez, Anthony (11:18.63);
  4. David Trinidad, Watkins (11:19.80);
  5. Alex Chambliss, Spillane (11:23.04);
  6. Austin Shaw, Smith (11:27.46);
  7. Thomas Davis, Salyards (11:29.01);
  8. Luke Abad, Spillane (11:32.17);
  9. Nathan Garr, Spillane (11:33.26); and
  10. 10.  Jorge Salazar, Smith (11:37.97).

Anthony Middle School won the eighth-grade girls’ race with a score of 39, finished ahead of runner-up Salyards (45) and third-place Spillane (73).

Anthony’s runners to tally the winning score were Michelle Trochez (second overall, 12:00.65), Anna Demeritt (third overall, 12:36.09), Natalie Irugas (fifth overall, 13:04.93), Jamie Falls (14th, 13:35.67) and Samantha Fernandez (15th, 13:38.12).

The top 10 individual eighth-grade girls were as follows:

  1. Cassidy Graham, Salyards (11:54.33);
  2. Michelle Trochez, Anthony (12:00.65);
  3. Anna Demeritt, Anthony (12:36.09);
  4. Elisa Grillo, Salyards (13:01.86);
  5. Natalie Iruegas, Anthony (13:04.93);
  6. Deandria Lawrence, Truitt (13:09.31);
  7. Pamela Murray, Spillane (13:09.45);
  8. Lexi Chau, Cook (13:21.17);
  9. Aidyn Lawton, Salyards (13:24.76); and
  10. 10.  Hope Griffin, Salyards (13:27.46).

Salyards Middle School won the seventh-grade boys’ race with a team score of 49, followed by second-place Hamilton (109) and third-place Smith (117).

The runners that comprised Salyards’ winning score were Alex Macin (second overall, 12:07.76), Cohen Gray (10th overall, 12:35.55), Joshua Cremer (11th, 12:37.13), Ryan Harris (12th, 12:37.60) and Jack Behar (14th, 12:42.43).

The top 10 individual seventh-grade boys were as follows:

  1. Bryan Pena, Watkins (12:07.06);
  2. Alex Macin, Salyards (12:07.76);
  3. Luke DeMerritt, Anthony (12:11.09);
  4. Will Blancett, Smith (12:13.17);
  5. Austin Schultz, Hamilton (12:18.16);
  6. Theirry Garcon, Spillane (12:23.44);
  7. Samuel Jackson, Arnold (12:26.20);
  8. Jake Thompson, Aragon (12:28.42);
  9. Isaac Izaguirre, Hamilton (12:29.05); and
  10. 10.  Cohen Gray, Salyards (12:35.55).

Hamilton Middle School won the seventh-grade girls’ race with a score of 60, finishing ahead of runner-up Salyards (67) and third-place Smith (92).

Hamilton’s runners that comprised its winning score were Naysa Martin (seventh overall, 13:46.83), Addie Hensley (eighth overall, 13:47.16), Peyton Kursawski (13th, 14:05.94), Jolie Duhon (15th, 14:07.58) and Magen Brotemarkle (17th, 14:18.00).

The top 10 individual seventh-grade girls were as follows:

  1. Brooke Hensley, Salyards (12:36.38);
  2. Camryn Adams, Smith (12:38.56);
  3. Emily Ellis, Salyards (13:34.15);
  4. Tracey Matindu, Anthony (13:42.06);
  5. Nicole Trochez, Anthony (13:43.02);
  6. Kinleigh Erwin, Salyards (13:45.38);
