Feb. 20, 2018—Students from six CFISD high schools earned ‘Best of Category’ honors at the inaugural district-wide Cosmetology Competition, held Feb. 10 at Langham Creek High School.

Eighty-five projects were submitted for the competition.

“We wanted to have another opportunity for our students to compete and maybe use this as the precursor for the [SkillsUSA] state competition and give them some practice,” said Dr. Sharon Hogue, coordinator for career and technology education. “We were thrilled with the first-year turnout. It was very exciting. We just know that we’re going to grow and get better and have more projects next year.”

Of the students to earn top honors, four came from Langham Creek. Sophomore Anayah Dunbar earned Best of Category in Braiding. Juniors Daisy Cota, Olivia Dominguez and Melanie Iglesias won Best in Category in Mini Salons Innovation.

Cypress Lakes High School junior Maria Madrigal not only won Best in Category in Fantasy Hair, but also Best in Show for the competition.

“It was really exciting,” Madrigal said. “At first, I was really nervous because I saw the people in my class (and) what I was competing against. I didn’t expect this.”

Other students to earn Best of Category were:

  • Bridgeland High School freshman Ruth Poole (Nail Art);
  • Cy-Fair High School junior Jessica Eslinger (Evening Comb-out);
  • Cypress Ridge High School junior Ana Rivas (Permanent Waving); and
  • Jersey Village High School junior Ashley Hernandez (Wet Set).

The competition was a realistic extension of the cosmetology classroom curriculum, with even students enrolled in Introduction to Cosmetology able to participate. The program allows students to work toward the Texas Cosmetology Operator License.
