Jan. 7, 2018—Twenty-six CFISD wrestlers won medals, including seven who claimed individual championships, in their respective weight classes at the 17th annual CFISD Invitational, held Jan. 4-5 at the Berry Center.

For the third year in a row, the Cypress Ranch High School girls’ team finished as the district’s highest-placing representative. The Mustangs placed fourth, giving them three top-four finishes during the stretch. They scored 116 points to finish behind champion Katy Morton Ranch (147 points), Keller Timber Creek (133.5) and Weatherford (129).

Other CFISD girls’ teams to place among the top 20 teams were Cypress Ridge (10th, 96 points), Langham Creek (13th, 85) and Cypress Creek (20th, 63.5).

In the boys’ tournament, Cypress Ranch had the highest finish among CFISD teams, placing ninth with 127.5 points. Cypress Ridge (104) and Cypress Falls (97) placed 15th and 17th, respectively. Katy won the team title with 237.5 points, finishing ahead of runner-up Prosper (212).

“We came into this as a litmus test,” said Christopher Potter, Cypress Ranch wrestling coach. “We thought we would do well. I don’t think we did as well as we hoped…but all in all, our kids did step up at the end and we were the highest CFISD team. I’m really happy with that but we’re not satisfied.”

Five of the individual champions from CFISD came on the boys’ side. Among them were Cy-Fair’s Garrett Orlando, who won the 132-pound division after placing third a year ago, and Cypress Ranch’s Jacob Grogan, who won the 120-pound class after finishing fourth last year in 106.

“I’ve been working for this for four years,” Orlando said. “I’ve come up short every time but now, it’s just feels so surreal to come out on top.”

Said Grogan: “It’s nice to win it. Last year, I lost to a couple kids I don’t think I should have, so it’s good to come back this year and beat some quality opponents.”

On the girls’ side, Cypress Park’s Fahydat Bello made history. She was not only the Tigers’ first-ever medalist in the invitational, but did so in championship fashion after placing first in the 165-pound division.

“I really wanted to make my coach proud and my teammates proud, and it really showed,” Bello said. “I’ve been putting in a lot of work to get to where I am.”

The David Pruitt Most Outstanding Female Wrestler was The Woodlands College Park High School’s Brittyn Corbishley, who won the 185-pound weight class. The David Pruitt Most Outstanding Male Wrestler was Katy High School’s Daniel Manibog, who won the 160-pound weight class.

The Most Outstanding Wrestler award is named in honor of former Langham Creek High School wrestling Coach David Pruitt, who passed away in January 2013 after a bout with cancer.
