June 26, 2019—Air Force JROTC units from Cypress Ridge (TX-20028) and Langham Creek (TX-20061) high schools were among the 102 units across the United States to receive the 2018-2019 Distinguished Unit Award with Merit, as announced by the AFJROTC Headquarters.
Two additional units – Cypress Springs (TX-20016) and Cy-Fair (TX-20057) high schools – were recognized by earning the Distinguished Unit Award. The unit at Cypress Creek High School (TX-20102) earned an Outstanding Organization Award.
These annual awards by the Department of the Air Force recognize units and cadets who have distinguished themselves among their peers through achievements and contributions to their communities.
In earning the Distinguished Unit Award with Merit, Cypress Ridge and Langham Creek AFJROTC units met the minimum criteria for the Distinguished Unit Award and achieved an overall “Exceeds Standards” rating during the 2018-2019 school year.
Award minimum criteria includes the unit not being on probation and having had at least a “Meets Standards” rating on its most recent unit evaluation. In addition, each cadet must complete an average of 12 hours of community service for the Distinguished Unit Award and an average of eight hours for the Outstanding Organization Award.
Cypress Ridge, Cy-Fair and Langham Creek earned Distinguished Unit awards for the third year in a row, while Cypress Springs earned its second in three years. CFISD has had multiple Distinguished Unit Award winners the last eight years.
According to a congratulatory letter from Col. Paul Lips, units earning the Distinguished Unit Award with Merit are “limited to the very best of the best of our nation’s 900 Air Force JROTC units.” In addition, a memo to honorees stated the awards “recognize the personal growth and accomplishments of the cadets, contributions of the instructors as mentors and the support of the school and local community.”
There are nearly 900 AFJROTC units across the United States and at select schools in Europe, in the Pacific and Puerto Rico. Enrollment is at more than 120,000 cadets who complete more than 1.6 million hours of community service each year.
