Oct. 2, 2019—Cypress Woods High School senior Govind Chada and Cypress Springs High School senior Brent Smith participated in two separate MIT programs this summer. Chada participated in the MIT Beaver Works Summer Institute (BWSI) while Smith participated in the MIT Online Science, Technology and Engineering Community program (MOSTEC).
Chada was among 240 students selected from across the country to participate in the rigorous BSWI program. From July 8-Aug. 4, Chada worked on hands-on projects, took online courses and attended lectures presented by leading scientific researchers. In BSWI, students are placed into one of ten courses. Chada was selected for the Medlytics program, which explores the relationship between data science and medicine.
Through the program, Chada created a capstone research project that focused on using machine learning to identify risk factors and predict patient risk for opioid use. The project won the Most Notable Project award.
"Chada and his team brought great initiative and work ethic and demonstrated exceptional ability to conduct high-quality research in a short period of time," said Dr. Kajal Claypool, lead instructor for Medlytics. "The research findings are very interesting and significant with potentially far-reaching impacts in helping curb the opioid epidemic in the United States."
Chada heard about the program through teachers at Cypress Woods.
“Cypress Woods teachers and administration provide great support for extracurricular activities in STEM by creating opportunities like these,” Chada said. “In my senior year, I am looking forward to working with my teachers to promote excellence in science by mentoring students and encouraging them to take advantage of all the opportunities available and achieve greater heights using the Cy Woods 212 spirit.”
Smith participated in the MIT Online Science, Technology and Engineering Community program (MOSTEC). MOSTEC is a six-month program with both online and in-person components. The program is highly selective and offers courses in astrophysics, machine learning and electrical engineering, among other courses.
Smith was selected to participate in the Scientific Writing and Neuroscience program. From Aug. 5-9, Smith traveled to MIT’s campus and had the opportunity to interview Dr. Byron Caughey, Chief of the National Institute of Health TSE/Biochemistry section. Smith also dissected a sheep’s brain and met with MIT professors and admission staff.
Smith discovered technology and ideas through MOSTEC that he might not have seen otherwise.
“MOSTEC is an incredible opportunity and an incredible experience,” Smith said. “Meeting people who were excited about learning and passionate about life was a blessing. I don’t think there’s much out there like it.”
