Oct. 15, 2017—Watkins Middle School staff members opened their doors to former staff and students and community members for a “grand re-opening” event celebrating the newly renovated school’s 35th anniversary on Oct. 14.

The event included a ribbon cutting and balloon release in front of the campus, as well as vendor booths, photo frames and refreshments. Tours were given of the school, which completed major renovations over the summer.

“You hear it sometimes in those home improvement shows, that this campus has that ‘wow factor,’” said Dr. José Martinez, Watkins principal. “As soon as visitors come in, immediately it’s like, ‘wow.’ The school is very inviting; you get a sense of the brightness, the light and the overall space.”

Renovations at the campus included major mechanical, plumbing, electrical and technology system replacements and infrastructure upgrades. The building received a replacement roof, new covered walkways, parking lots and bus loops. A new football field and track were also installed.

“With the hurricane delaying us a couple weeks, the students already had that anticipation to return to school,” Dr. Martinez said. “Then as they walked in through these doors, there was a sense of home immediately. There is an energy that you feel when you’re walking the hallways, from the students, from the teachers but also from the community. I think another 35 years is easily part of our future.”
