History

Named for the former principal of Cypress-Fairbanks High School, Carlos Watkins Junior High School opened its doors in 1982. Mr. Watkins retired as principal of Cy-Fair High school in 1989, but we still look forward to his visits, and each year he honors us by presenting the "Carlos Watkins Scholastic Achievement Award" to the students with the highest grade point averages in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade.

VIPS

Partnerships with the community are vital in order to strengthen instructional outcomes for all students. We would like you to develop a collaborative relationship with us that will foster long-term student achievement ... one that offers opportunities for all students ... making a difference together. Watkins Parent Partnership

Community involvement and parental support is vital to the success of our vision and goal to be recognized as an EXEMPLARY school. Working as a partnership, we can share the commitment to create an environment in which every student is successful. Volunteer parents give unselfishly of their time and talents in supporting programs and activities on campus throughout the year. We encourage all parents to be involved in the school experience of their children.

Meeting the Need of Adolescent Students

Watkins supports the recommendation made in the Carnegie Report, Turning Points 2000, to provide students with a nurturing network by organizing the student population into small teams. Each team consists of approximately 130 student with 5 core teachers in math, social studies, science, language arts, and reading. Students have the opportunity to build positive relationships with peers and teachers throughout the year. In addition to the regular curriculum, students may choose to participate in extracurricular activities and electives. Electives available to students include: French, Spanish, art, speech, theater arts, choir, orchestra, band, industrial technology, family consumer science, and communication application.
