Anthony, Salyards, Smith win district cross country team titles

Oct. 25, 2021—Three different middle schools won team championships at the CFISD Middle School Cross Country Meet, held. Oct. 20 at Cypress Woods High School.

Anthony Middle School swept the girls’ team titles, while Smith Middle School won the eighth grade boys’ championship and Salyards won the seventh grade boys’ title.

Smith won the eighth grade boys’ race with a team score of 39. The Sabercats finished ahead of runner-up Spillane (84) and third-place Salyards (111).

The runners comprising Smith’s first-place score were Maddox McCallister (fourth overall, 11:42.58), Nazim Benguedda (fifth, 11:44.92), Ryan Barry (ninth, 11:58.00), Reece Rodriguez (12th, 12:07.10) and Vihaan Chamkur (13th, 12:07.29).

The top 10 individual eighth grade boys were as follows:

  1. Kyle Pawlak, Salyards (11:28.56);
  2. Grant Averill, Salyards (11:35.58);
  3. Aden Ortega, Watkins (11:38.61);
  4. Maddox McCallister, Smith (11:42.58);
  5. Nazim Benguedda, Smith (11:44.92);
  6. Damian Romero, Watkins (11:45.49);
  7. Garrett Wright, Spillane (11:55.75);
  8. Lorenzo Lucy, Anthony (11:55.88);
  9. Ryan Barry, Smith (11:58.00); and
  10. Isaac Mwakutuya, Truitt (12:06.01).

Anthony won the eighth grade girls’ race with a score of 57, edging second-place Spillane (58) and also finishing ahead of third-place Salyards (69).

Anthony’s runners to tally the winning score were Mayen Anderson (third overall, 13:33.73), Barrett Trumbo (sixth, 14:05.28), Sarah Gelacio (10th, 14:13.48), Bibiana Martinez (13th, 14:15.39) and Mia Maldonado (30th, 14:53.64).

The top 10 individual eighth grade girls were as follows:

  1. Laney Barnes, Spillane (12:51.04);
  2. Haley Hill, Salyards (13:23.08);
  3. Mayen Anderson, Anthony (13:33.73);

Salyards won the seventh grade boys’ race with a team score of 32. The Bengals were followed by runner-up Anthony (93) and third-place Smith (105).

The runners that comprised Salyards’ winning score were Patrick McHugh (first overall, 11:51.75), Carson Tietjen (fifth, 12:34.65), Kayo Kunnuji (sixth, 12:34.86), Aidan Huffman (eighth, 12:43.92) and Colin Smith (12th, 12:57.99).

The top 10 individual seventh grade boys were as follows:

  1. Patrick McHugh, Salyards (11:51.75);
  2. Adryan Flores, Spillane (12:13.42);
  3. Padilla Juan, Anthony (12:13.49);

Anthony won the seventh grade girls’ race with a score of 52, finishing ahead of runner-up Spillane (61) and third-place Hamilton (62).

Anthony’s runners that comprised its winning score were London Bloom (fourth overall, 13:54.72), London Thomas (fifth, 13:54.75), Hallie Tanton (ninth, 14:10.98), Jazmyn Chambers (13th, 14:31.50) and Kaitlyn Barnes (33rd, 15:21.00).

The top 10 individual seventh grade girls were as follows:

  1. Sarah Victor, Arnold (13:02.73);
  2. Amari White, Spillane (13:04.22);
  3. Sophia Davis, Salyards (13:46.77);
